A Guide to Choosing a Gunner Kennel for Your GSP

If you’re a GSP owner that takes their dog to the park quite often or takes them on hunting trips, you’ve probably wanted to invest in a kennel for a while but couldn’t figure out what would work best for your dog.

Which size should you buy? Should you go for an overly spacious kennel?

Which type will hold your dog’s weight? All of these questions will be answered in this post!

Let’s get to know more about the GSP breed and figure out what size gunner kennel is best for them.

Short Answer

Depending on your dog’s age, you should opt for a small or medium gunner kennel.

If your GSP is still a puppy, a small kennel will do. If your GSP is fully grown, opt for a medium kennel. Avoid large kennels no matter your GSP’s size as they’re not ideal for this breed.

Overview of German Shorthaired Pointers

German Shorthaired Pointers, or GSPs for short, can be your best home companions as well as your best hunting buddies.

GSPs are considered one of the most versatile pointer breeds. They’re known for their constant enthusiasm.

Whether it’s playtime or time for work, these awesome dogs will be over-excited to spend time with you. They’re also very friendly and loving towards family, especially children.

GSPs were bred in Germany in the 19th century for hunting purposes. They’re known for their strong and agile legs.

Because of their speed, energetic demeanor, and ability to endure hard work for long hours, they’re considered excellent hunters, even though they’re not the biggest among the pointer family.

Keep in mind that GSPs get bored easily, so you should try to be consistent with their training and discipline.

You should also be prepared to go through a bit of a workout in the process because these guys need a lot of exercise. Quite the athletes!

Now, let’s talk about which gunner kennel would be the best fit for them, and why you should choose gunner kennels.

What Size Gunner Kennel to Choose for GSP?

Gunner Kennels come in four sizes: small, medium, and large. For GSPs, we highly recommend small and medium-sized kennels. Large kennels are a no-no.

If your German Shorthaired Pointer is still a puppy, the small size will be a good fit for it.

The small size comes in 21.75 inches in length, 14.5 inches in width, and 15.5 inches in height from the inside.

From the outside, its dimensions are 24.5 inches in length, 18.62 inches in width, and 20.5 inches in height.

They can carry up to around 27 pounds, which is more than enough for your puppy, as most German Shorthaired Pointers weigh 10-20 pounds in their first 8-12 weeks.

If your GSP dog is fully grown, the best fit for it would be the intermediate size. This size stands at 30 inches in length, 18 inches in width, and 25 inches in height from the interior.

Exterior-wise, this size stands at 34 inches in length, 24 inches in 23 inches in width, and 28.5 inches in height.

Most full-grown German Shorthaired Pointers weigh around 42 to 46 pounds, and medium-sized kennels can carry up to 49 pounds, which makes it the best fit.

Now, you might be wondering, why not get the large-sized kennel for my full-grown dog?

The answer is that a very spacious kennel isn’t the greatest idea for your dog. If they have a lot of space, they’ll tend to play around, and they’ll most likely bump around inside the kennel while on the road.

They might even think there’s enough space to go to the bathroom in the kennel.

That’s why the intermediate size is the perfect fit. It gives them enough space to be relaxed and at ease without feeling suffocated, but not too much space that it causes trouble on road

Why Choose a Gunner Kennel?

A Gunner Kennel can be an excellent pick for your GPS dog because it’s not just about keeping your dog confined on the road.

Oftentimes, the weather can be too harsh on your GSP, and that’s where a high-quality gunner kennel comes in handy.

If you live in an area with frequent rain, gunner kennels are sure to keep your dog from dealing with it. Some models come with roll-down, repelling windows that you can use when it’s raining.

They’re high-quality and they’re sure to protect your pooch from the rain. They can even muffle the sound a bit that your dog might not even notice it’s raining outside.

If it’s cold and windy outside, no need to worry about your dog shivering the whole time on the road! Gunner Kennels are well-insulated and they’re sure to keep your dog warm and cozy the whole time on the road.

What if it’s the middle of summer and the heat is unbearable? This also wouldn’t be a problem because gunner kennels have great ventilation, ensuring that your dog is kept cool.

Another thing that might worry you is your dog trying to escape on the road. Luckily, that’s not a possible scenario with gunner kennels.

A gunner kennel’s door is quite sturdy, featuring stainless-steel hardware.

Most gunner kennels also feature safety latches for extra protection. Your dog will never be able to get through these layers of protection even in their dreams.

Note also that the walls of gunner kennels are double-rotomolded and are of the highest quality.

Further, they feature a powerful frame system that’s reinforced with aluminum. This guarantees your dog’s safety in case of any outside shock or accident.

Another important fact about gunner kennels is that most gunner kennels are airline-approved, and because of their high quality and top-notch protection, you can rest assured that your dog will be safe during the flight.
